Statement on Senate Committee Passage of START Act (S.1885)

October 14th, 2017

The START Act is focused on removing barriers to the safe development and deployment of self-driving vehicle technologies. With roughly 40,000 lives lost on our roads last year – the overwhelming share of which are related to human error – Congress has the opportunity to reduce the overall number of accidents and injuries with innovative vehicle technologies. The START Act can help better define the balance between state and federal responsibilities and in the process will help create new transportation options for the disabled, conserve energy and create new jobs. The Coalition for Future Mobility applauds the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee’s work to advance this important legislation and will continue to push for full Senate consideration in the near future.
